fotos_que_no︎ 2022 - On going

fotos_que_no is both a sanctuary and a common grave. It is a rescue and a celebration, that of imperfection. It is a project of reconciliation with the image and a transformation of what was once private and no longer is.

Each photograph in this series was discarded in the past for reasons related to beauty, perfection, aesthetic and technical value, etc. During my recurrent visits to the archive, I often came across these images that held deeply significant memories for me but that aesthetically did not quite convince me for one reason or another. By relocating these images in a public context and re-signifying them as "valid" photographs, I find myself reclaiming the space for rejection, both my own and that of the viewer. A new place of prayer with different rules.

By accompanying the images with fragments of those memories, I not only revalue the photograph itself but also the idea of secret as something illusory. Writing about these memories makes them tangible and grounds them, distancing them - through a mental reconfiguration exercise - from that nostalgic limbo where memory attempts to perfect the recollection smother every act of gilding in gold leaf when they are nothing more than decomposing matter.
